A Dietitian Mom's Dilemma

Ian is now going to be travelling some for work. The promise is that he will be home every weekend. And, it won't be all the time since there is still some work in and around Regina. So, I'm wandering around the house not getting much of anything accomplished since Kellen went to bed. Seems strange and quiet. So, I guess I'll share my thoughts with whoever is out there...

I'm not going to dwell on the sad fact of Ian being gone. So, I'll share the next pressing thing on my mind. I have a dietitian mom's dilemma. The sitter asked me if it would be okay if she gave Kellen a popsicle when the other kids are having one. No answer would come out of my mouth. What I wanted to say was "NO! No, sugar and dyes necessary!" But, I thought about how my answer was going to come across. I thought about how not giving all the kids the same thing might create problems. So, I said "Umm, I'll think about it." And think about it I have! I even went to the store to buy juice, so I could make "popsicles" for him. I even started to cut up fruit to freeze in them. Then, I realized that making and taking his own popsicles might not really solve any problem and was going to be a big hassle. By this time, I was starting to feel like a crazy mom.

So, I quit worrying about it and made my decision. Here's my simple answer I'll give her tomorrow..."No, he's still pretty little so I'd rather not give it to him yet. Let me know if it becomes an issue with having a different snack than the other kids." Sound fair enough? I hope so. I know a popsicle won't do horrible things to him. But I'd rather he had some fruit, some milk...anything with some nutrients for the growing boy!

I don't want to make any moms feel like food they would give their kid isn't good enough for my kid. But, I also don't want to have him eat nutrient-poor foods just cause that what is so often the norm in our society. Poor kid, eh? I will relax about it...when he's a little older.

So, hope I haven't ruffled any feathers. Kids, foods, and mom's views can be a touchy issue I've learned. I am laughing at myself, if its not coming through in my writing! Anyone want to give any thoughts or share their own stories?

P.S. If you tell me to get over it and give him a popsicle, your comment will be deleted...I don't want to hear it!! :)

i like your response janet. if he really wants a popsicle...maybe you could just use a little bit of juice and mostly water, "special popsicles" :) Our friends sometimes give their kids "juice" like this and crackers are sometimes referred to as "cookies" :) blessings!

Do you have a juicer? I don't think it would be bad making Kellen special popsicles. I think it is great! maybe you could give the babysitter some good recipes for healthy popsicles, then all the kids are getting some nutrient dense treats. Plus the kids won't all be on a sugar high for her.

When I was babysitting some Mom's brought in their own food, (one Mom made up popsicles with fruit juice and fruit chunks in it) and I found it was no problem with the kids having different foods. You do what feels right for you. Your little guy is your precious gift from God. 'Take Care'

ha ha- Ivan's first taste of cake was at his 1st birthday and I thought that was crazy to celebrate with all that sugar. Dominique has had it many times already. She also eats very well from all the food categories. My solution is for us to eat healthy with some treats and to let them do the same. Of course with grandparents (even adopted ones) it's hard. They want to sugar them up the most of all! A good rule we have adopted also is if he didn't eat all his supper (if there is desert)- no desert.

I used to blend up peaches, bananas and berries with some orange juice and freeze it to make popsicles. If you ever try this - strain it first all the little seeds in the berries are super yucky when eaten as a frozen treat.
Experiment and learn that is just so great Janet - good job!

I say that YOU are the mom, and you get to do whatever you want, and not fear judgment. I'm learning that as a parent you get advice/criticism from all sides, and you just have to do what feels right in your heart. And as your nutrition PhD friend, I support your decision. No popsicles for 1 year olds!

We were soooo much like that with Kaelie (our first) she didn't have anything with sugar in it for probably at least the first two years of her life (except we did give into cake at her 1st. bday which she hardly touched).....but you are so normal Janet....and good for you! People used to tell me that we would relax about it especially with our next ones....and I never thought so....but sad to say LOL, we have relaxed a lot. I think as long as you can do it, go for it! Your answer does sound very reasonable! Let us know how it worked out!
